5th Grade Choir Night!

Choir Night!

5th Grade Parents                                                                       November 27, 2013

This letter is to inform you of an opportunity for all 5th graders to explore their options of singing in the choir next year at the middle school.  The William Byrd Middle and High School choir students are inviting all 5th graders to join them in singing the national anthem at a middle school boys’ basketball game on Thursday, December 19th.

5th graders will ride their bus all the way to the middle school after school and be greeted by Mr. Matt Bartley, the choir director, some elementary music teachers, and a host of students currently in choir at WBHS and WBMS.  They will have an opportunity to participate in some fun activities, enjoy a free pizza party and be a part of a large chorus singing at the basketball game.

Giving permission is as simple as signing the form below and being at the middle school at 6:00pm on the 19th to pick up your child.  If your child does not ride a bus to school they may ride over on one of the busses with a friend who is also going to the event.  All bus drivers will be given a copy of this letter and a list of students who are riding to the middle school.  Students will also be given a Roanoke County field trip form to bring to the event with them.

Please feel free to call or email me if you have any questions.  I look forward to seeing your child participate in this fun event, which will give him/her a chance to see a little of what the choir program is about.

Hollins University White Gift Service

To the Parents of young singers at Horn Elementary:

Each holiday season, Hollins University presents its annual White Gift Service. This is an evening of lessons, carols, and choral music for the whole family – complete with choirs, brass quintet, organ, and bells.

This year, I would love for you to join us in song!  You are warmly invited to sing with the Hollins University Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Roanoke Chamber Brass, and student instrumentalists for one very fun and musical evening.

My goal this year is to invite children and families from around the city – from area schools, churches, and musical groups – to participate in one large group number, showcasing the community spirit and holiday cheer present across Roanoke Valley. I would be so pleased for your child (or children) to take part. The commitment would only be for three brief rehearsals – two short ones with just the children, and one slightly longer one where we would add in the college students.

If you and your child are interested, please send me an email at FOUTSSL@Hollins.edu, or call 540-362-6541.

I look forward to a wonderful experience, sharing holiday joy across the Hollins and Roanoke community.
Thank you for your interest!

4th and 5th Grade String Program

Dear Parent,

Roanoke County schools, in partnership with the Roanoke Symphony, are please to be offering our after school violin class for 4th and 5th graders. We are also continuing with our experienced player from previous years. I am excited to announce that our new teacher this year is Nicole Paglialonga. Mrs. Paglialonga comes to us from Florida where she was involved professionally as a violinist and instructor.

We will be offering this after school strings class at the Burton Center for Arts and Technology.  We are planning on offering beginning violin classes as well as continuing with intermediate classes. The classes will be held on Fridays this year and will be scheduled as follows:

 Friday 3:00-4:00 pm beginner violin

Friday: 4:00-5:00 pm 2nd year players

Friday 5:00-6:00 Intermediate players 3rd and 4th year players

There is no fee for the class instruction.  However, students and parents will be responsible for securing their own instruments, music books, and transportation to and from the classes.    The method book that will be used for the class is “All for Strings” published by Shar music.  This book can be ordered on line at http://www.sharmusic.com/ or at local music stores.  Students should have their book and violin by their first class.  These classes will meet every Friday for the remainder of the school year with the exception of holidays.  You will receive a schedule.

We are planning an informational meeting, at 7:00 pm, October 14 at the Burton Center for Arts and Technology for all interested students and their parents.  Please plan on attending this meeting if you wish for your child to participate.   At this meeting you will get the chance to ask any questions that you may have. We will also address how to fit and secure a violin for your child.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call. Or send an email

Sincerely,

Barry S. Tucker
